Portrait: What makes the Ben Nevis Coire Leis special

Imagine: High up in the Scottish Highlands, where the weather can sometimes be quite unpredictable Having sampled four seasons in one hour, the journey of a whisky begins. More precisely, on Ben Nevis, at a proud 1,345 meters the highest mountain in Great Britain. Up there, the water springs forth, making its way down the mountain – probably with more adventurous spirit than most of us experience in our daily lives.

This route also passes the Coire Leis, a small, almost mysterious lake that not only impresses hikers but also lends its name to a special whisky: the Ben Nevis Coire Leis. A name that sounds like you'd have to practice it three times before confidently ordering it in a pub.

Behind it all is the traditional Ben Nevis Distillery, which has been distilling whisky at the foot of the mountain since 1825. Then as now, what is created here has character – and plenty of it. Perhaps it's the water, perhaps the location, or simply the fact that up here they are guided less by trends and more by experience.

The Coire Leis is one of the few original bottlings from the distillery that regularly make it to Germany. And it comes in the way many whisky fans love: natural, i.e. without colorings and without chill filtration. Essentially the "honest version" - nothing hidden, nothing fussed over, just as it is. A bit like the friend who always says what he thinks, but is valued precisely for that reason. As a single malt, matured in first-fill bourbon casks, it's also a wonderful introduction to the world of Ben Nevis. Not an intimidating mountain, but rather a friendly invitation to approach it slowly.
Or, to put it another way: a whisky that doesn't shout "Climb me!", but charmingly says, "Come on, let's tackle this together."

Tasting Notes: This is how the Ben Nevis Coire Leis tastes like

  • Nose: Fresh, ripe lemons open the aroma profile and create a lively first impression. Then, aromas of fresh herbs, juicy apricots, and oatcakes unfold. A malty base is accompanied by intense roasted aromas of wood and nuts.

  • Palate: Full-bodied and almost oily in texture, with strong impressions of fresh apple pie and heavily roasted walnuts. Ripe, yellow pears and a pleasant caramel sweetness are also present. Spicy accents of cinnamon, coriander, white pepper, and oak add further depth.
  • Finish: Long and harmonious with a balanced interplay of fruity and spicy notes that linger pleasantly.
