Glen Spey was founded by a local corn trader who took the opportunity to add a distillery to his corn mill.
Compared to other distilleries in the Rothes area, Glen Spey's production has remained relatively modest.
However, it is the only distillery in Rothes rumored to be home to a ghost.
Glen Spey is among the few Scottish distilleries to use a water-cooled purge tube in their spirit still, giving the new spirit a slight oiliness.
Worth knowing about the distillery
Glen Spey Distillery sits beneath the ruins of Castle Rothes, once home to the Earls of Rothes who lived there until a devastating fire in 1662.
Glen Spey whisky distillery was founded in 1878 by James Stuart and Co. as the Mill of Rothes, the buildings originally being an oatmeal mill.
Six years later James Stuart bought the Macallan distillery and in 1887 the English company W&A Gilbey acquired Glen Spey for £11,000.
Nose: light smoke, plus vanilla and overripe pears - behind them dark, ripe fruits
Palate: an elegant sugar sweetness and again the pears, with tart with tropical fruits - especially pineapple and fresh lime - above all slightly spicy notes with a pinch of salt
Finish: medium-length finish with a slightly oily note - the fruit cake is present
