Portrait: What makes the Benriach Quarter Casks special
Anyone who has ever marched more purposefully towards their gate than towards Duty Free at the airport has probably never discovered Benriach Quarter Casks. This bottling is exclusively for the travel retail market – for all those who only intended to "have a quick look" and suddenly find themselves with a fine bottle in their hand luggage. The single malt is produced at the traditional Benriach Distillery in the famous Speyside whisky region.
Speyside is, in a sense, the epicenter of Scottish whisky – you'd only find more distilleries per square kilometer if you counted sheep on a hill. Benriach was founded in 1898, but shortly thereafter had to take a break that lasted longer than many a long-haul flight. Regular production didn't resume until 1965, and since then the distillery has earned a reputation for diversity and experimentation. A decisive turning point came in 2004 when the distillery, under new management, once again moved into the spotlight.
Since 2016, Benriach has been part of the portfolio of Brown-Forman, an international spirits group that manages globally recognized brands. Despite global ownership, Benriach has remained true to its Scottish identity – including traditional production methods and a remarkable range of cask finishes.
The "Quarter Casks" refers to a historical cask size. These smaller casks were quite common in the past, before larger versions dominated for practical reasons. Today, this format is being deliberately revived – a charming blend of nostalgia and clever product idea.
The fact that this edition is exclusively available in travel retail adds an extra touch of exclusivity. You could say: a souvenir for grown-ups that lasts considerably longer than a fridge magnet. Benriach represents an exciting combination of tradition, rediscovery of old methods, and modern brand strategy.
The Quarter Casks fits perfectly into this picture – a piece of Speyside history that just happens to be waiting for you at the airport.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Benriach Quarter Casks tastes like
- Nose: Initially, vibrant aromas of candied citrus peel and ripe green pears emerge. A delicate herbal freshness is present, particularly hints of mint and eucalyptus. With a little time, spicy nuances of freshly ground white pepper and creamy vanilla unfold. A pronounced, spicy oak underlies everything, lending structure and depth to the aroma.
- Palate: On the palate, the whisky initially follows the aromas: Candied citrus peel and spicy oak take center stage. These are complemented by a pleasant sweetness of raw cane sugar. As the palate develops, fruity notes emerge, most notably juicy pear and ripe apricot, lending the overall impression a harmonious, balanced fruitiness.
- Finish: The finish is medium-long and characterized by a subtle, pleasant sweetness that lingers gently.
