Portrait: What makes the Aberlour Casg Annamh Batch #0010 special

Scottish whiskies often bear evocative names—and Aberlour Casg Annamh is certainly one of them. "Casg Annamh" is Gaelic for "rare cask." It is a fitting name for a range of bottlings where the selection and combination of different casks play a central role.

Aberlour’s home lies in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside region—specifically, in the village of Aberlour itself.

James Fleming founded the distillery there in 1879. His motto, "Let the deed show"—meaning "let actions speak for themselves"—is remarkably fitting for a whisky where, ultimately, it is the bottle and its contents that must win you over.

Aberlour embodies a long Scottish whisky tradition and a deep connection to the local region. The water used in production comes from the nearby Birkenbush Springs, while the barley is sourced from local farms. It is quintessentially Speyside—with little reason to look unnecessarily far beyond its own horizons.

With Casg Annamh, the focus is largely on cask selection. The whisky matures in a combination of Spanish oak casks that previously held Oloroso sherry, alongside two different types of American oak casks. This brings together three distinct cask varieties—each with its own story and unique contribution to the maturation process.

Of particular interest to whisky enthusiasts is the fact that Casg Annamh is released in different batches. The sequential batch numbers also make Casg Annamh an interesting proposition for anyone who enjoys comparing different bottlings or simply appreciates numbered editions.

Casg Annamh is bottled at a robust 48% ABV and carries no age statement. Instead of a prominent number on the label, the focus here is on the selection of casks.

And should the pronunciation of "Casg Annamh" cause a moment of confusion: don't worry. A confident nod towards the bottle at the whisky bar will likely get the message across just as well.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Aberlour Casg Annamh Batch #0010 tastes like

  • Nose: Fruity and inviting, featuring juicy orange and sweet, glazed cherries. A subtle ginger spice adds a pleasant liveliness to the nose.
  • Palate: Sweet fruit notes meet spicy accents on the palate. Crisp apple and ripe peach form the fruity foundation, while cinnamon provides warmth. A subtle, spicy liquorice note provides an interesting counterpoint.
  • Finish: The finish is soft, harmonious, and pleasantly sweet. The fruity impressions fade slowly, leaving behind a delicate spiciness. A subtle hint of heat ensures a lively conclusion.
