Portrait: What makes the Ferrand 10 Générations special
The Ferrand 10 Générations is like a well-kept family album - only in liquid form. Instead of faded photographs, this cognac tells the story of ten generations of the Ferrand family, who have dedicated themselves to winemaking and distillation in the heart of the Cognac region for centuries.
More precisely: in the Premier Cru de Cognac, the Grande Champagne, where chalky soils and tradition are equally deeply rooted. The House of Ferrand stands for craftsmanship with conviction. Here, production isn't simply a matter of making wine; it's a conscious interpretation of what the terroir offers.
The Ugni Blanc grapes used are fermented for four to five days and then distilled in the classic way – twice in small pot stills (25 hl, open flame) – including distillation on the lees. Sounds technical? It is. But it's precisely this method that ensures as much of the base wine's character as possible is preserved. Or, to put it another way: nothing is left behind that could tell a story.
The blend itself is a small journey through time: Cognacs aged five to seven years meet a carefully measured proportion of 25-year-old distillates. It is initially matured predominantly in used, medium-toasted Cognac casks, supplemented by approximately 20% new French oak.
And because Ferrand likes to add another chapter, 20% of the blend is also allowed to spend a final year in former Sauternes wine casks. A finish with a French touch, if you will.
Ferrand 10 Générations is therefore less a product for fleeting moments than a tribute to patience, heritage, and familial stubbornness.
Not a loud star, but a masterful storyteller – with a pedigree, backbone, and a gentle twinkle in his eye.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Ferrand 10 Générations tastes
- Nose: On the nose, the cognac reveals itself as complex and elegant. A delicate scent of fruitcake opens the bouquet, accompanied by raisins, apricots, coconut, and caramel. With some time in the glass, floral accents of roses and orange blossoms unfold, complemented by spicy nuances of nutmeg and ginger, which lend the aroma additional depth.
- Palate: On the palate, the cognac presents itself as opulent, round, and full-bodied. The dominant notes are structuring oak and pepper, providing strength and tension. Beneath these, harmoniously integrated aromas of baked pear and honey unfold, followed by fruity hints of Muscat grapes and pineapple. Cloves add spicy accents and underscore the balanced, complex overall impression.
- Finish: The finish is long and multifaceted. A fresh hint of mint provides vibrancy, while prunes, oranges, and licorice add depth and warmth. Towards the end, vanilla and fresh tobacco emerge, lingering and giving the cognac an elegant, spicy-smooth finish.

Eingekochte Früchte und reife Trauben, sehr süß in der Nase.
Im Geschmack folgen kräftig Karamell, Eiche und darunter Gewürze. Zimt? Peffer?
Harmonisch und reichhaltig, ein toller Schluck.
