Portrait: What makes the Arran Cask Finish Sauternes special
Once upon a time there was a small Scottish island called Arran. It is so idyllically situated between the Highlands and Lowlands that even sheep vacation there. And right in the middle of it all: a distillery that has been proving since 1995 that you can make pretty good whisky even without centuries-old family secrets.
The Isle of Arran Distillers were true pioneers – not because they reinvented the wheel, but because they were brave enough to simply build a distillery on a windswept island where there are more seagulls than people. Today, the company is a fixture in the whisky universe – with a penchant for experimentation.
And that's where our hero comes in: the Arran Cask Finish Sauternes. A single malt that not only matures on Arran, but also spends a short "stay abroad" in Sauternes wine casks at the end of its whisky life. French dessert wine meets Scottish island charm – sounds like a diplomatic mission for good taste.
Do the French know what's happening to their casks? Probably not. But the whisky seems happy, so we'll let it be.
So the Arran Cask Finish Sauternes isn't an old, dusty cellar whisky, but rather the hipster cousin that returns from studying in Bordeaux and now tells everyone about its semester abroad. Only in bottle form.
So if you don't just think of old men in leather armchairs when you think of whisky, but would also like to try a sip of island adventure with a slight French accent – voilà, here it is: Arran Cask Finish Sauternes. Santé, Slàinte, or simply: Cheers!
A harmonious, playful whisky with a clear Sauternes finish, without masking the character of the Arran distillery – perfect for connoisseurs who enjoy the sweet and fruity side of single malts.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Arran Cask Finish Sauternes tastes like
- Nose: The influence of the Sauternes casks is clearly evident from the first sniff - a sweet, fruity nose with aromas of honey, ripe peaches, and apricots, accompanied by vanilla, white grapes, and a hint of citrus. Beneath lies a fine malty base with a hint of oak and a light floral touch - like a stroll through an orchard on a warm summer day on Arran
- Palate: On the palate, soft and full-bodied with an elegant sweetness reminiscent of candied fruit, crème brûlée, and honey. This is followed by notes of light raisins, baked pears, and a touch of nutmeg. The sweetness is beautifully balanced by the characteristic spice of Arran whisky and a subtle oak structure. A hint of almonds and cloves adds additional depth
- Finish: Medium to long with a warming feeling - the sweetness remains present, slowly losing itself in notes of vanilla, oak spice and a slightly dry, almost nutty finish - a smooth, elegant finish that makes you want the next sip
