Profile: What Makes Riesling Altenberg de Bergbieten Special

The Altenberg de Bergbieten lies in the municipality of Bergbieten in the northern part of Alsace. The soils consist mainly of clay-rich marl and limestone, littered with pebbles, and contain a remarkable amount of gypsum, as the site is close to a gypsum mine. The gypsum promotes finesse in the wines, the marl gives intensity and structure.

The Mochel family has been established in Traenheim, 20 kilometres west of Strasbourg, since 1669. The domaine farms ten hectares, five of them in the Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergbieten.
