Profile: What Makes Andresen White Port 10 Year Old Special
Aged white ports are a rarity – and precisely for that reason an insider tip for explorers. They show how much depth and character a white wine can have when it matures for years in old wooden casks. Andresen White Port 10 Year Old impresses with barrique notes framed by tropical fruit, a ripe, aromatic nose and a taste that holds sweetness and freshness in fine balance.
The port house J. H. Andresen was founded in 1845. Its namesake Jann Hinrich Andresen came to Porto as a penniless young man, found work in a trading house and then set up on his own; he married a Portuguese woman and became naturalised. To this day the house is a purely family-run business, one of the last of its kind in Vila Nova de Gaia. Andresen is best known for its vintages and colheitas; the vintage ports are traditionally trodden in lagares.
The 10 year old white port also follows this craft tradition: classically trodden, matured for a long time in old wooden casks, in a style that is delicate and soft yet complex.
