Portrait: What makes the Old St. Croix Non Plus Ultra Ambre d'Or Excellence special
There are rums, and there are Non Plus Ultra - literally: "no more!" This Latin expression once adorned the legendary Pillars of Hercules, which marked the end of the known world marked."The world ends here!" was written above the gate to the Strait of Gibraltar. A final warning for sailors: Better turn back, the unknown lurks out here!
But what did real adventurers do? Exactly - they sailed on. And they probably already had a sip of Old St. Croix Non Plus Ultra Ambre d'Or Excellence in their hands (or would have liked to have had it, if it had already been invented).
Today, "Non Plus Ultra" stands for the absolute non plus ultra - the best of the best, the supreme spirit among rums. And that's no empty phrase: only the oldest and finest barrels make it into this exclusive bottling. No machines, no hocus-pocus - here the blending is still done by hand, with a great deal of experience, passion, and a touch of obsession.
The maturation? A poem in itself: Former Sauternes barrels, French white wine barrels that once housed noble sweet luxury wine. These not only give the rum a royal touch, but also a label that practically screams for gold rim.
Old St. Croix is therefore not a rum for quick long drinks at a shared apartment party. It's a liquid monument to explorers, frontiersmen, and connoisseurs. Those who drink it should be prepared - not to turn around, but for the journey beyond the Pillars of Hercules.
Non Plus Ultra? Perhaps. But who knows what comes next...
Tasting Notes: This is how the Old St. Croix Non Plus Ultra Ambre d'Or Excellence tastes like
- Nose: A very soft and fruity bouquet. Ripe apricots and juicy nectarines dominate, accompanied by the delicate sweetness of dried raisins. A hint of mild honey rounds off the aroma. In the background, subtle spicy aromas provide depth and balance.
- Palate: On the palate, the rum is soft, creamy, and round. The fruity aromas of stone fruit and raisins continue and are carried by an elegant vanilla note. Caramel adds additional richness to the flavor profile, while subtle spice notes are again noticeable in the background.
- Finish: The finish is long and elegant, with lingering sweetness that fades only slowly. Gradually, the spice becomes more prominent, giving the finish an exciting development and structure.
Allergy Advice: May contain traces of walnuts
