Profile: What Makes Dudognon Heritage Grande Champagne Special
The Dudognon family has grown grapes since 1776 in the small village of Lignières-Sonneville, about eleven miles south-east of the town of Cognac in the heart of Grande Champagne. The family acquired the present estate in 1852. For the production of its cognac it uses only wines from its own vineyards. The oak barrels for maturing the eaux-de-vie come from the neighbouring province of Limousin; the cognac spends about eight months in new oak before being moved to older barrels.
The Dudognons are among the few cognac producers who sell none of their brandy to the big houses, offering only their own well-aged bottlings. Raymond Dudognon, born in 1927 and descendant of a long line of cognac distillers, expanded the estate to just under 35 hectares; today his daughter Claudine runs it together with her husband. Decisions during distillation are made with the glass in hand rather than with measuring instruments.
The house of Dudognon places particular value on the reduction process, lowering the alcohol content to drinking strength. Besides the natural reduction of roughly 0.5% per year, reduction is carried out with “Les Petites Eaux”, older low-strength brandies. Dudognon cognacs are neither filtered nor subjected to cold treatment – prerequisites for a cognac that, through its fullness, harmony and balance, is a great rarity. The Heritage is bottled at an age of around 40 years.
