Portrait: What makes the Glenmorangie The Accord 12 year old special
If there were a university for whisky in the Scottish Highlands, Glenmorangie would have long since held the chair for cask science - with an honorary doctorate in "Elegant Maturation." Since 1843, the small town of Tain, in the very north-east of Scotland, has been distilling not only high-proof spirits, but also some pretty big ideas. And in the truest sense of the word: Glenmorangie boasts the tallest stills in Scotland - so large that a full-grown giraffe could easily do a headstand in them (which, of course, we don't recommend to anyone).
"The Accord" is part of a series dedicated to the art of cask maturation - and at Glenmorangie, that means leaving nothing to chance, doing everything with style. The distillery has a whole team of whisky "geeks," led by the so-called Director of Whisky Creation (no, that's not a Harry Potter character, but a real job).
The name "The Accord" represents the harmonious interplay of two cask types - a diplomatic masterpiece made of American oak and Oloroso sherry casks from Spain. So you could say: This whisky is something like the UN of wood flavor – only with more style and significantly less bureaucracy.
Whether for Highland newbies or experienced malt meditators – Glenmorangie The Accord 12 year old is the perfect bottle companion for anyone seeking a single malt with history, attitude, and a twinkle in their eye.
A balanced, approachable single malt with depth and character – typical Glenmorangie.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Glenmorangie The Accord 12 year old tastes like
- Nose: inviting and complex with distinct sweetness - ripe fruits such as plums and raisins meet toffee, honey, and vanilla - with warm spice aromas - cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of clove - as well as a gentle oak background - a light hint of orange zest rounds off the bouquet
- Palate: smooth and round with a pleasant balance between fruitiness and spice - dried fruits, fine caramel, and delicate chocolate notes combine with a slightly nutty component - the sherry cask aging adds depth, while the bourbon casks provide sweet and creamy elements - harmonious and well-structured
- Finish: medium to long, with a fine oak spice and gentle notes of dark chocolate and dried fruits - A warm, slightly spicy finish lingers on the tongue without dominating - elegant and pleasantly restrained - like a polite Highlander taking a charming leave
