Profile: What Makes Kilchoman Sanaig Special
Kilchoman was founded in 2005 by Anthony and Kathy Wills at Rockside Farm on Islay’s west coast – the first new distillery on the island in more than 124 years. It is a true farm distillery and the smallest on the island; for the “100% Islay”, barley grown on the farm is malted, distilled, matured and bottled on site – Islay’s only single farm single malt.
Sanaig is named after an inlet on Islay’s rugged Atlantic coast and is the sherrier counterpart to Machir Bay. It is a composition of four and five-year-old ex-bourbon and ex-oloroso sherry casks, with a clearly higher proportion of sherry casks than Machir Bay. The sherry brings dried fruit, spice and chocolate to the whisky – and balances Kilchoman’s typical citrus freshness and peat smoke.
In 2016 Sanaig was awarded best non-age-statement single malt Scotch whisky at the International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC). In the 0.2 l format it is easy to get to know at leisure.
Tasting Notes: What Kilchoman Sanaig Tastes Like
- Nose: Soft fruit with caramel and vanilla; plus fragrant heather, raisins, pear and orange peel, stone fruit and mixed spices, carried by rich peat smoke
- Palate: Toffee and peat smoke, then light citrus notes and a gentle sweetness; over-ripe plums and red cherries give way to barbecue peat smoke, oak and dark chocolate
- Finish: A very nice balance between peat smoke, ripe fruit and sweetness; caramel, cinnamon, clove and brown sugar provide lastingly sweet, smoky notes
