Portrait: What makes the Marzadro Grappa Diciotto Lune Botte Porto special

The Grappa Diciotto Lune Botte Porto from Marzadro is something like the adventurer among grappas: a South Tyrolean with Wanderlust, which first develops its character in local forests and then explores the world of port wine casks.
It is produced in picturesque Trentino, a region where mountains, vineyards, and craftsmanship combine to form a harmonious whole. Here, the Marzadro distillery has demonstrated for decades that Italian precision and creativity go perfectly together – and that patience is a virtue worth living for.
For Diciotto Lune Botte Porto, the pomace of select South Tyrolean grape varieties is used: Marzemino, Teroldego, Merlot, Moscato, and Chardonnay. This diverse group is first distilled in a classic steam bath to produce a particularly smooth distillate.
One could almost say the grappa takes a relaxing steam bath before embarking on its long maturation period. The maturation itself takes place in two stages - almost like a two-stage fitness program for grappa. First, it spends 18 months in 500-liter Casks made of cherry, ash, oak, and robinia.
Four different woods ensure that the grappa can develop its depth of character, like an Alpine school student who must excel in all subjects. Then it goes into port wine casks, also for 18 months, where the grappa absorbs the gentle spice and charm of this international classic – without losing its own character.

The end result is a grappa that impressively combines tradition, craftsmanship, and a spirit of adventure. Each bottle tells the story of South Tyrol, the hands of the master distillers, and a meticulous journey through wood and time.
The limited aging in different casks makes it something special, not something to be casually enjoyed, but something to be savored. In short: the Diciotto Lune Botte Porto is like a South Tyrolean gentleman who first learns who he is in his native mountains and then conquers the world – stylishly, patiently, and with a touch of adventurous spirit.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Marzadro Grappa Diciotto Lune Botte Porto tastes like

  • Nose: On the nose, the grappa presents soft, intense aromas of dark berries and ripe fruits. A light sweetness blends harmoniously with subtle spicy notes, giving the bouquet depth and complexity.

  • Palate: On the palate, the grappa is full-bodied and smooth. The fruity sweetness of ripe berries is accompanied by spicy wood notes and a hint of exotic spices, giving the taste an elegant complexity.

  • Finish: The finish is long and well-rounded. Fruity and spicy notes linger harmoniously, while the sweetness fades subtly, leaving the palate pleasantly balanced.
