Portrait: What makes the Mortlach 12 year old special
Mortlach 12 year old - even the name sounds a bit like an old Scottish storyteller nodding approvingly in the background. And indeed, this single malt comes from a distillery so steeped in tradition that you almost expect to encounter a bagpiper in a kilt upon entering the grounds.
The Mortlach distillery, located in the heart of Speyside, was founded back in 1823 and has been a kind of hidden gem among Scottish distilleries ever since. Ask any whisky aficionado, and you'll quickly learn: Mortlach is the stuff connoisseurs talk about when they want to impress each other. Mortlach is famous above all for its 2.8-fold distillation. And no, that's not a typo, but a rather idiosyncratic, historically developed production method so complicated that it could almost be described as Scottish origami.
While other distilleries are content with two or three distillations, Mortlach has developed a system so intricate that presumably only a master distiller and a very patient accountant can keep track of it all. But it is precisely this peculiarity that has earned Mortlach the nickname "The Beast of Dufftown" - not because the whisky roars, but because the stills are so temperamental. The Mortlach 12 Year Old was allowed to spend its youth in ex-sherry and bourbon casks - a kind of Scottish boarding school for good upbringing and character development.
And although we're not talking about taste here, one can at least say that this cask combination gives the whisky a reputation for being exceptionally complex. Or, as they might say in Dufftown: "It's got a lot going on behind the Cask staves."
So, if you're looking for a single malt that breathes tradition, exudes craftsmanship, and at the same time has a touch of a charming eccentric, the Mortlach 12 Year Old is the perfect choice. A whisky with history, character, and a distillation process so unique that even Scotsmen chuckle at it. Cheers!
Tasting Notes: This is how the Mortlach 12 year old tastes like
- Nose: An inviting bouquet with fruity aromas reminiscent of ripe fruit. A hint of dark chocolate joins in, lending the aroma a sensual depth. Spicy oak rounds out the profile and provides a warm, structured nose.
- Palate: On the palate, it is soft and harmonious. Ripe red cherries make their presence felt first, followed by the familiar dark chocolate, which again adds richness. Pleasantly spicy notes underlie everything, giving the flavor a balanced, multi-layered foundation.
- Finish: It fades softly and dryly, with an elegant lightness that invites another sip.

Wenn auch der 14- und 16-jährige deutlich Wertungen einzustufen sind eine tolle Neuauflage des 12.jährigen dieser ungewöhnlich guten Destillerie.
