Portrait: What makes Plymouth Gin special
Plymouth Gin is not just a gin - it is a piece British history in a glass. And not just any gin: It comes from the oldest operating gin distillery in England, the legendary Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth. Yes, that's right - the Plymouth where ships once set sail and the spirit of adventure was invented.
Distilling has been taking place here since 1793 – and not in the back room of a pub, but in a former monastery. This perhaps explains the reverent calm that overcomes you when you open the bottle (or was that the first sip?).
It is distilled using the particularly soft water from Dartmoor – and with just seven botanicals. No wild superfoods or hypermodern flavor experiments, but true classics: juniper, coriander, cardamom, angelica and orris root, plus orange and lemon peel. In short: A gin that knows what it's doing – and has been doing so for quite some time.
Plymouth Gin is also a bit unusual: It can only call itself "Plymouth Gin" if it actually comes from Plymouth. Just like real champagne comes from Champagne – only with a more British sense of humor.
Conclusion:
Plymouth Gin is a classic, yet distinctive gin with a very rounded aroma. Ideal for purists and perfectly suited for cocktails that demand an elegant, balanced character. Cheers, mate!
Tasting Notes: This is how the Plymouth Gin tastes like
- Nose: soft, round, and very balanced - the juniper is in the foreground, but is significantly milder than in classic London Dry Gins - behind this are fresh citrus aromas of orange and lemon, accompanied by a fine herbal spice and a hint of sweet earth from angelica and iris root
- Palate: smooth and harmonious with a pleasantly creamy texture - juniper, coriander, and cardamom interact perfectly, supported by subtle citrus freshness - the botanicals are excellently integrated - no single one obtrudes, but everything feels like a harmonious ensemble
- Finish: medium-long, elegant, and soft - a gentle spice lingers, accompanied by delicate citrus notes and a slightly floral finish - no Burning, no aftertaste - simply a fine, clean finish
