Profile: What Makes Bushmills Steamship Coll. #3 Char Bourbon Cask Reserve Special
The Steamship Collection celebrates the 125th anniversary of the great voyage of the steamship “SS Bushmills”, which in September 1890 carried the first shipment of Irish whiskey from the Bushmills distillery to America. Each bottling in the series puts a different cask type in the spotlight: the Sherry Cask Reserve and the Port Cask Reserve are followed by the Char Bourbon Cask Reserve as the third bottling. The series was originally released for travel retail.
The Char Bourbon Cask Reserve contains whiskeys matured in freshly charred first-fill ex-bourbon casks from Kentucky. They are made from American white oak and heavily charred to Bushmills’ specification (“char”). The basis is a long-standing relationship with master coopers from Louisville, who reserve these casks specially for Bushmills.
Bushmills sits on the coast of County Antrim in Northern Ireland on the River Bush and is regarded as the oldest licensed whiskey distillery in the world: in 1608 King James I granted the licence to distil; in 1784 Hugh Anderson founded the present distillery. The single malt is traditionally triple distilled in copper pot stills – Bushmills has always stood for mild, triple-distilled whiskeys.

- Nose: Intense aromas of honey and sweet vanilla, plus ripe pear and toasted oak; behind them oak spice, crème brûlée and a hint of wood smoke
- Palate: The vanilla and honey again, plus orange zest, honey-drenched toast and tinned peaches; then becoming spicier with notes of dried herbs, spicy oak and crème brûlée, underpinned by a pleasant bitterness of dark chocolate and oak char
- Finish: Long, soft, slightly drying finish – vanilla and oak remain for a long time
