Portrait: What Makes Jameson Black Barrel Special
Anyone who thought the Irish were only good at Guinness and good humor still knows Jameson Black Barrel Not so. This whiskey is practically the James Bond of the Irish: classic, stylish, and with plenty of fire in the barrel.
It is, of course, produced at Jameson, arguably Ireland's most famous whiskey distillery. A place where whiskey isn't just a drink, but a way of life – and where they're obviously particularly good at setting barrels alight.
Black Barrel uses "Double Charred First Fill ex-Bourbon Barrels". Sounds complicated, but it means: The bourbon barrels are thoroughly charred again before filling – twice. Not by accident, but intentionally. This creates a thick layer of char in the barrel, which teases out just about everything the wood has to offer in terms of flavor.
The whole thing used to be called "Select Reserve," but today it's called Black Barrel – sounds cooler, is cooler. A whiskey for people who know that sometimes a little more (wood) char makes all the difference.
In short: Irish whiskey, pretty hot at second glance. Sláinte!
Tasting Notes: This is what Jameson Black Barrel tastes like
- Nose: spicy and warm with a pleasant depth - aromas of sweet caramel, vanilla, and burnt wood rise to the nose, accompanied by a hint of roasted nuts and dried fruits - the double-burned Casks leave a distinct but harmonious wood note
- Palate: Full-bodied and smooth with a beautiful balance between sweetness and spice - toffee, creamy vanilla, and a touch of dark chocolate are present, complemented by roasted notes, light pepper, and a hint of oak - the influence of the heavily charred barrels is clearly noticeable, but elegantly integrated
- Finish: Medium to long with a pleasant warmth - the sweetness fades slowly, accompanied by spicy wood notes and a gentle roasted tones that linger for a while
