Profile: What Makes Glenfiddich Malt Master’s Edition Special
The Malt Master’s Edition from Glenfiddich first matured in ex-bourbon casks, then in ex-sherry casks. It is named after the distillery’s sixth Malt Master, Brian Kinsman, the first Malt Master to double-mature Glenfiddich in two different cask types. The limited bottling appeared at the end of 2012 with around 18,000 bottles.
Glenfiddich was founded in 1886 by William Grant in Dufftown; on Christmas Day 1887 the first single malt ran from the stills. William Grant & Sons is still a family company run by the founder’s descendants. In the sample the Malt Master’s Edition is easy to get to know.
Tasting Notes: What Glenfiddich Malt Master’s Edition Tastes Like
- Nose: Plenty of damp oak with aromas of fresh vanilla and cold charcoal, plus light traces of damp earth; malt, nuts, berries, pepper and a distinct sherry influence
- Palate: Multi-layered – ripe plums and dark cherries are present, joined by spicy notes, roasted nuts and fresh fruit cake; deep caramel and the ginger spice typical of Glenfiddich
- Finish: Fruity-spicy – the oak and the roasted notes again
