Portrait: What makes the Drambuie Whisky Liqueur special
Drambuie Whisky Liqueur is one of those drinks that isn't just served in a glass, but comes with a whole story. And not just a small one – but one in which a prince, an escape, and a secret recipe play a leading role. So you could say: This liqueur has experienced more adventures than many a Hollywood hero.
The name itself comes from Gaelic. The word Drambuie is derived from "An Dram Buidheach," which means something like "the sip that brings satisfaction." A surprisingly honest description for a drink – after all, many things promise satisfaction, but few deliver it as reliably as a time-honored Scottish liqueur. The story begins in 1746, a time of considerable political turmoil in the Scottish Highlands.
Following his defeat by the English, the Scottish heir to the throne, Charles Edward Stuart – better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie – was forced to flee. During this dramatic episode, he found refuge with the MacKinnon family on the Isle of Skye. As a token of gratitude, the prince is said to have bequeathed the family a special recipe. Not a castle, not a treasure of gold – but something considerably more practical: the formula for an exceptional liqueur.
A kind of royal thank-you that has endured remarkably long. Only many years later did this family secret become an official brand. In 1906, the descendants of the MacKinnons founded the Drambuie Liqueur Company and began to use the recipe commercially.
This made Drambuie one of the oldest whisky liqueurs in the world - and probably also one of the few whose origins lie in a mixture of loyalty, a story of escape, and Highland hospitality.
The liqueur is based on Scottish grain whiskies, which are combined with herbs and other secret ingredients. The exact recipe remains a closely guarded secret to this day - probably safer somewhere in Scotland than the last biscuit in an office break room.
Thus, Drambuie is not just a drink, but a small piece of Scottish history in a glass: born out of gratitude, passed down through generations, and to this day a symbol of tradition, secrets, and a very satisfying sip.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Drambuie Whisky Liqueur tastes like
- Nose: An aromatic interplay of herbs, spices, and heather honey defines the first impression. The base of mature Speyside Scottish whiskies lends the aroma additional smoothness and an elegant depth.
- Palate: On the palate, the liqueur is sweet and creamy with distinct honey notes. These are complemented by herbal and slightly fruity nuances, accompanied by the typical malty character of the whiskies used. Overall, the taste is pleasantly robust and full-bodied.
- Finish: The finish is smooth and lingering. Honey sweetness and spicy herbal notes remain present for a long time, providing a harmonious, warming aftertaste.

Herrlich süsser Genuss, eine Kombi von Whisky und Honig ohne zu kleben.
