Profile: What Makes the Balvenie Nosing Glass “The Glencairn Glass” Special
The glass has the typical tulip shape of a nosing glass. The bulbous lower part lets you warm the whisky very well with the palm of your hand. The tapered opening prevents the rising aromas from streaming out of the glass and directs them concentrated to the nose. The front bears the Balvenie lettering.
The Glencairn glass was designed by Raymond Davidson, managing director of Glencairn Crystal Ltd in East Kilbride near Glasgow. He wanted to create a glass for whisky drinkers similar to a traditional sherry nosing glass (copita) that brings out the nose and palate of the whisky while being robust enough for the bar. His sons Paul and Scott Davidson took up the designs again around 25 years later; the glass has been in production since 2001. Master blenders from leading Scottish distilleries reviewed its size and shape, which were optimised for a 35 ml pour and the addition of water. The glass has since been awarded the Queen’s Award for Innovation.
The Balvenie was founded in 1892 by William Grant & Sons right next to Glenfiddich in Dufftown and to this day maintains traditional crafts: the distillery has its own malting floors, its own cooperage and a coppersmith’s workshop, and grows part of its barley itself. The Balvenie glass is thus the fitting statement for every fan of this renowned Speyside distillery.
