The Glenfiddich 12 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is one of those whiskies that even those who don't know much about whisky have probably seen before. The distinctive triangular bottle can be found in bars, living rooms, and probably also in many a kitchen cupboard that was originally intended only for pasta.
The story begins in 1886 when William Grant decided to build his own distillery. And not with a large construction company or a spectacular architectural firm, but with the active help of his family. Brick by brick, a distillery was built in the Speyside region that would later become world-famous.
The distillery's name is Glenfiddich – Gaelic for "Valley of the Deer." This is also the origin of the famous deer on the label, which is arguably the most laid-back brand ambassador in the whisky world.
A particularly charming detail of the story: The first distillate flowed from the still on Christmas Day 1887. While others were unwrapping presents or eating turkey, the Grant family presumably had a very special reason to celebrate. It is also noteworthy that the distillery is still owned by the Grant family and is now run by the fifth generation. In an industry where brands change hands as often as football players change clubs, this is a pretty impressive constant.
The twelve-year-old Glenfiddich is considered the distillery's most famous expression and has played a significant role in making single malt whisky popular worldwide. In fact, Glenfiddich was one of the first brands to actively market its single malt internationally – a decision that, in retrospect, proved to be quite clever. Today, the whisky is produced by the family-owned company William Grant & Sons, which also owns other well-known spirits brands besides Glenfiddich.
But despite its global renown, the origin remains the same: a distillery in Scotland's Speyside region, founded by a family with a vision – and clearly a lot of patience.
