Profile: What Makes MacLeod’s Speyside Single Malt Whisky Special
This single malt whisky from Ian Macleod comes from one of the Speyside distilleries – which one remains a secret. Selected from prestigious stocks, it is meant to reflect the typical style of the region: light, fruity and gently sherried. Its character shows a very nicely pronounced sherry tone combined with floral notes.
Behind MacLeod’s stands Ian Macleod Distillers, an independent family business based in Broxburn in West Lothian. It includes the Glengoyne distillery in Stirlingshire, acquired in 2003, and Tamdhu in Knockando on Speyside, which was added in 2011. The house’s best-known blends are Isle of Skye, Smokehead and King Robert; in addition Ian Macleod bottles independent releases such as Chieftain’s and Dun Bheagan.
Tasting Notes: What MacLeod’s Speyside Single Malt Whisky Tastes Like
- Nose: Plenty of sherry and a light spiciness; plus a touch of pepper, honey, lemon peel, dried fruit, raisins and walnut
- Palate: Ripe, dark fruit and ripe grain, malty – distinct raisins and ripe plums; plus some orange, chocolate and a touch of salted caramel
- Finish: Surprisingly dry with floral notes, plus a honeyed, malty aftertaste
