Portrait: What makes the Talisker 10 year old special
Anyone who thinks of windswept coasts, dramatic cliffs, and sheep with enviably casual hairdos will sooner or later end up on the Isle of Skye. And right there, in the small town of Carbost, a whisky has been produced since 1830 that has as much character as a Scottish seaman with three life stories: Talisker 10 year old. The distillery was founded by the brothers Hugh MacAskill and Kenneth MacAskill – two gentlemen who apparently decided that the world desperately needed a whisky from Skye. An excellent decision, as it would turn out. The Talisker Distillery is still the oldest working distillery on the island and thus something of a grand old man among Skye whiskies – with a resilient spirit and a wealth of tradition.
Over the years, Talisker has weathered fires, changes of ownership, and the occasional stormy Atlantic storm. Today, the brand belongs to the international spirits giant Diageo, which is a bit like putting a robust islander into a perfectly tailored suit – he remains the same, but now knows exactly how to make an impression worldwide.
The Talisker 10 year old is, in a sense, the distillery's flagship. Ten years of maturation – long enough to mature, yet young enough to still exude a sense of adventure. It proudly bears the name of its home bay and is emblematic of the rugged beauty of the Highlands, even though Skye, strictly speaking, belongs to the Inner Hebrides. But in Scotland, they take such details in stride – the main thing is that the whisky is good. In short: Talisker 10 year old is not a drink that simply sits on the shelf. He is a liquid ambassador of the island with history, a windswept hairstyle, and a healthy dose of Scottish self-confidence.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Talisker 10 year old tastes like
- Nose: Powerful, dominant peat smoke immediately rises to the nose and is accompanied by a pronounced sea saltiness. Maritime hints are reminiscent of fresh oysters, while bright citrus aromas provide a lively, fresh component and lend the smoke a vibrant balance.
- Palate: On the palate, surprisingly smooth at first with rounded notes of dried fruit. These are joined by prominent smoke and distinct, robust notes of malty barley. As it develops, an intense pepperiness builds, which lingers powerfully and gives the whisky a distinctive spiciness.
- Finish: Very long and warming. The peppery notes reappear prominently, accompanied by a pleasant, appetite-stimulating sweetness that lends depth and lingering quality to the finish.
