Profile: What Makes Auchentoshan Three Wood Special
Auchentoshan first matures this malt whisky in ex-bourbon casks; it is then finished in Spanish oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry casks – hence the name Three Wood. The sample makes it easy to get to know.
Like all Auchentoshan malts it is triple distilled, similar to Irish practice; this gives a purer distillate with fewer impurities.
Tasting Notes: What Auchentoshan Three Wood Tastes Like
- Nose: Blackcurrant, orange, plum; plus cinnamon, nuts, grapes, raisins, figs and cigar-box wood tones
- Palate: Fruity with distinct aromas of roasted hazelnuts and butterscotch; praline and maple syrup, orange, ginger and cinnamon
- Finish: Fresh with long-lasting sweetness; some herbal wood, toffee and chocolate
