The History of Santos Dumont
At the end of the 19th century, a special man lived in Brazil: Santos Dumont. He was the son of Frenchman Henri Dumont, who owned the large coffee and sugar cane plantation called Cabangu in the state of Minas Gerias.
Santos Dumont spent his childhood between coffee, sugar cane, from which rum and cachaça were distilled, and the latest inventions to get the most out of the plantation's production. The machines on the farm fascinated him from an early age. He often drove the farm's own steam tractor or steam locomotive. He was also a big fan of Jules Verne, which sparked his enthusiasm for flying. Even before his tenth
By his birthday he had read all of his books. During one of the long, sunny afternoons on the plantation, he began to write his autobiography, about the dream of flying that had also reached him.
Santos Dumont left Brazil for Paris. There he pursued his great passion, flying. He built his first own Zeppelin, with which he won the "Deutsch de la Meurthe" prize in 1901. He was the first person to fly around the Eiffel Tower in a zeppelin. He donated his winnings, 100,000 francs, to the poorest people in Paris.
This made him a famous and highly respected man. Santos Dumont is also known for having commissioned his good friend Louis Cartier to create the world's first wristwatch. He asked Cartier to design a watch that would make it possible to tell the time while flying with both hands on the control stick. Santos died on July 23, 1932 at the age of 59.
The rum Santos Dumont was created in honor of this world-renowned aviation pioneer, nobleman and style icon.
