In 1779, Daniel Kinahan founded a company on Dublin's Trinity Street that would become one of the most storied names in Irish whiskey - by 1809, the brand already carried its distinctive "L.L." mark, originally used to identify casks reserved for the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. After opening a London branch in 1841, the house was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria in 1845 for supplying wines and spirits - an honour that helped make Kinahan's a fixture of British and Irish drinking culture for decades. After the original company ceased trading in the 1920s, the brand was revived in 2014 at the very same historic Dublin address.

Where does the "L.L." mark come from?

The abbreviation originally stood for "Lord Lieutenant" - casks bearing this mark were reserved for the British viceroy of Ireland. This designation later became a permanent part of the brand name.

Why did the brand disappear for a time?

The original company, Kinahan & Co., ceased trading in the 1920s - a fate shared by many historic Irish whiskey houses during the economically difficult interwar years and US Prohibition. It wasn't until 2014 that the brand was revived at its original location.
