Portrait: What makes the Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 14 special

Not every whisky needs a spectacular, fancy name to make an impression. Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 14 is content with a simple batch number - and precisely for that reason, it comes across as a whisky that knows exactly what it’s capable of. After all, understatement is practically part of the DNA in Campbeltown.

This small harbor town on the Kintyre Peninsula boasts an extraordinary whisky heritage. At one time, Campbeltown proudly held the title of "Whisky Capital of the World" and was home to more than 30 distilleries.

Today, only a few remain. While this makes the region significantly smaller, it is by no means quieter. On the contrary: each of the remaining distilleries carries forward a remarkable piece of Scottish whisky history. Kilkerran hails from the Glengyle Distillery, a distillery with a history almost as fascinating as the whiskies it produces. Originally founded back in 1872, it disappeared from the scene for many decades. It was not until 2004 that the Mitchell family breathed new life into it. The Mitchells have shaped Campbeltown’s whisky world for generations, proving that tradition sometimes simply requires someone to turn the lights back on. The name Kilkerran is also deeply rooted in the region; it is derived from the Gaelic “Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain” - the historical name for Campbeltown. Rather than constantly reinventing themselves, the people here prefer to look back with respect. That approach works remarkably well when the past has so much to tell.

Batch No. 14 was matured in 90 percent bourbon casks and 10 percent sherry casks. The distillery makes no secret of this, preferring to forgo flashy marketing buzzwords. True to this approach, it is bottled without chill filtration and without unnecessary frills. Honest craftsmanship takes center stage here.

Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 14 is not a whisky for the grand stage. Instead, it is the sort that stands outside the distillery in a weatherproof jacket, offers a friendly nod, and then proves that character doesn't need loud words - just a compelling pedigree.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch No. 14 tastes like

  • Nose: A complex bouquet featuring sweet honeycomb and freshly toasted whole-grain bread. These notes are complemented by hints of seafood grilled over an open fire and savory, smoky bacon.
  • Palate: Bold peat smoke greets the palate, accompanied by lemony shortbread. Juicy melon provides a fruity freshness, while delicate notes of ham add extra depth to the whisky.
  • Finish: Balanced and long-lasting, featuring harmonious peat smoke, fresh lemon zest, and a subtle sweetness reminiscent of powdered sugar. A pleasantly buttery mouthfeel rounds off the finish, making it smooth and supple.

Campbeltown: The Victorian Whisky Capital of the World

Once known as the whisky capital - boasting over 30 distilleries in the 19th century - Campbeltown looks back on an eventful past as a former hub of whisky production and continues to enjoy worldwide renown today
Today, the three active distilleries in Campbeltown - Springbank, Glengyle, and Glen Scotia - preserve the legacy of the former Victorian whisky capital of the world, producing unique single malts through traditional production methods.
