Portrait: What makes the Daftmill 13 year old Winter Batch Release 2012/2026 special
Some distilleries produce whisky. Others live it. And then there's Daftmill - they make whisky when they have the time. Sounds relaxed? It is. And that's precisely what makes this Lowland Single Malt so special.
In the heart of the Scottish Lowlands lies Daftmill Farm - a place where cows, potatoes, and barley set the tone. The Cuthbert family farms here as they have for generations. The small difference: Since 2006, some of their own barley has not only been grown but also processed into whisky right on the farm. However, this only happens when the farm's schedule allows. Specifically, this means that once the cows have been tended, the fields plowed, and the harvest brought in, distillation takes place.
And otherwise? Nothing happens. No 24/7 operation, no industrial production schedule – just honest, handcrafted work in harmony with nature. The result is correspondingly rare. Only around 100 casks are produced here each year. For comparison: Large distilleries produce this in a good afternoon.
The Daftmill 13 year old Winter Batch Release (distilled on December 25, 2012!) is therefore not just a whisky – it's a small document of its time. Bottled in February 2026, matured in a combination of first-fill bourbon barrels and Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads, it embodies not only patience but also character. And then there's the limited edition: 3,475 bottles worldwide. That's not a small number... until you consider how many whisky fans there are.
In short: Daftmill isn't a whisky for quick consumption. It's for people who appreciate stories in a glass – and who know that good things sometimes simply need a little more time.
Or, to put it in the distillery's own style: It was made when there was nothing else to do. And that's precisely why it's so special.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Daftmill 13 year old Winter Batch Release 2012/2026 tastes like
- Nose: Delicate and inviting with aromas of ripe fruit, vanilla, and a hint of honey. These are complemented by gentle notes of dried fruit, a touch of caramel, and a subtle, nutty depth from the sherry casks. Light floral nuances and a hint of fresh barley round off the bouquet.
- Palate: Soft and balanced with a beautiful harmony of sweetness and spice. Notes of toffee, milk chocolate, and ripe fruit mingle with spicy oak accents. The influences of the bourbon and sherry casks are evident in the form of vanilla, raisins, and a touch of spice, without being overpowering.
- Finish: Medium to long, pleasantly warm and elegant. Gentle oak spice, delicate sweetness, and a slightly dry, nutty aftertaste linger, inviting another sip.
