Portrait: What makes the Longrow 100 Proof special
Imagine sitting on the windy coast of Campbeltown, where seagulls cry, the weather is always "interesting," and whisky isn't just a drink, but practically a member of the family. That's exactly where the Longrow 100 Proof Batch No. 2 (Release 2026) comes from - a name that sounds like someone just threw all the coolest words into a hat and shook it vigorously. Behind this dram stands the traditional Springbank Distillery, one of the last independent distilleries in Scotland that still does absolutely everything itself – from malting to bottling.
While other distilleries have long since been geared towards efficiency, here they apparently think: "Why do it the easy way when you can do it the traditional way?" And that's precisely what makes it so charming. The Longrow brand itself is, so to speak, the rebellious cousin of the Springbank family. While the classic Springbank has a rather polished appearance, Longrow likes to don a peaty cloak and roam around a bit more ruggedly.
The name, by the way, goes back to a long-gone distillery in Campbeltown – a little historical wink for connoisseurs. The 100 Proof version not only packs a serious punch, but also a certain air of seriousness: This isn't flirting, it's making a statement. And doing so with conviction. Batch No. 2 takes it a step further, indulging in a 2.5-year finish in Rioja casks – a combination that sounds like Scotland and Spain had agreed on a joint project during a very long evening.
Longrow remains true to its style: distinctive, a bit edgy, and definitely not for dull evenings. The limited edition feels almost like a well-kept secret among whisky enthusiasts – except that you immediately want to share it.
In short: This whisky isn't small talk. It's more like the person at the party who doesn't say much, but when they do, everyone suddenly listens.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Longrow 100 Proof tastes like
Nose: Red currants and vanilla take center stage. These are followed by spicy aromas of pepper and salami. Slight maritime notes and a distinct, ashy smoky aroma are present from the start.
- Palate: A strong peat smoke builds up. Notes of tobacco and cigar smoke. Dark fruits and a touch of leather add further depth.
- Finish: Spicy with a noticeable chili heat. Also present are cherry and a slightly menthol-like impression. The smoke lingers for a long time.
