Portrait: What Makes the Planteray Hogo Monsta So Special

Some rums are gentle companions for balmy evenings. And then there's the Planteray Hogo Monsta - the rock star among rums, which doesn't make a quiet entrance, but storms the stage with 56.6% ABV and a wild personality. Born in Barbados, at the legendary Stade's West Indies Rum Distillery, this rum is not for the faint of heart. The team there - a group of master distillers who apparently prefer pushing boundaries to setting them - has created a true "liquid monster." The raw material: molasses, quite traditionally. Fermentation takes a full two to three weeks, which, in rum terms, is practically an eternity.
The result is a rum with an incredible 2029 grams of esters per hectoliter of pure alcohol - a figure that even seasoned rum aficionados find raising their eyebrows. Distillation takes place exclusively in the pot still, the method that gives every rum a hefty dose of character.
And yes, this character is anything but shy. This ingredient used to be a secret ingredient of a master blender – something best kept secret because it made the entire blend so special. Now it can finally shine on its own, completely unfiltered, without added sugar, without any restraint.
The name "Hogo Monsta" says it all: "Hogo" stands for the intense, distinctive aroma of traditional rums – and "Monsta"... well, because you could hardly sell it as a "Hogo Kitten."

In short: The Planteray Hogo Monsta isn't a rum for everyone. But it's for everyone who appreciates true character – and isn't afraid to look a monster in the glass.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Planteray Hogo Monsta tastes like

  • Nose: Very intense and complex with distinct aromas of overripe tropical fruits such as banana, pineapple, and mango. Underlying these are pronounced, fermentative nuances – a hint of lacquer and olive brine – reminiscent of traditional high-ester rums. A subtle hint of spice rounds off the exceptionally powerful bouquet.

  • Palate: On the palate, the rum is strong and concentrated, with an oily, viscous texture. The high aromatic density creates an intense impression that clearly reveals the character of the high-ester style. Despite its 56.6% ABV, the wine remains controlled and impressively balanced.

  • Finish: The aftertaste is long, persistent, and intense, carried by the characteristic ester profile. The flavors linger noticeably on the palate, leaving a lasting, complex impression.
