Portrait: What makes the Glasgow 1770 6 year old Ruby Port Cask Finish special

Whisky from the Scottish Lowlands? Sure. From Glasgow? Now things are getting exciting. Since its founding in 2014, the Glasgow Distillery has demonstrated that whisky isn't just made on deserted islands and in the misty Highlands, but also in the midst of urban hustle and bustle - between street art, subways, and single malt.

The name "1770" goes back to the city's first distillery, which (surprise!) was founded in 1770. The current distillery is something of a reboot, with more stainless steel, better hygiene, and less smuggling. Here, three styles are distilled: unpeated double, unpeated triple, and peated double. This isn't a selection, it's a statement.

With a new series, Glasgow is now bringing order to the diversity - and demonstrating which style works particularly well with which cask. This limited edition kicks things off: 6 years old, finished in Ruby Port Hogsheads, powerful at 55% vol. - and limited to 1,200 bottles. In other words: urban, but not arbitrary.

The whisky first matured in the classic way in bourbon casks before spending almost half its time in a Ruby Port finish. The result isn't a red and tie, but a true Glasgow original – direct, complex, and without any frills like coloring or chill filtration.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Glasgow 1770 6 year old Ruby Port Cask Finish tastes like

  • Nose: Fresh strawberries and vibrant vanilla open the aroma, followed by raspberries in milk chocolate. In the background, subtle herbal notes of eucalyptus and a hint of pine emerge – vibrant and complex.
  • Palate: A fruity opening with summer fruits and juicy dark cherries. This is followed by creamy notes of fresh cream, marzipan, and sweet almonds, rounded off by a delicate strawberry sweetness.
  • Finish: Long and full-bodied. The fruity sweetness lingers and combines with subtle notes of pink peppercorns and dry oak tannins – elegant and structured.
