Portrait: What makes the Ardbeg ANTHOLOGY 15 year old - The Beithir's Tale special
Welcome to Islay - the small, windswept island where the peat lies in layers and the myths apparently hold up just as well as the whiskies. And when it comes to dramatic drams, Ardbeg has once again dug deep into its (fable) box: The Beithir's Tale, the latest and final bottling in the limited Anthology Collection, is not only 15 years old, but also supposedly selected by a sea monster himself. Or... swallowed. Depending on who you ask.
The Beithir - a snake-like monster with a bad reputation and good taste - has, according to Ardbeg, devoured three valuable casks. Only with the help of Jackie, Ardbeg's very own heroine with a pipe (a musical instrument, not tobacco!), was the beast banished and the casks saved. The result: a whisky that creates legends before the cork has even been pulled.
Matured in heavily toasted, air-dried designer bourbon casks (yes, that's really a thing), this dram fits elegantly into the eccentric line of its predecessors like The Harpy's Tale or The Unicorn's Tale – all limited edition, collectible, and with enough fantasy flair to make Tolkien jealous.
And so The Beithir's Tale isn't just another whisky – it's a Scottish fairytale in a bottle. True or not? No matter. Because, as the Ardbeg saying goes: Sometimes all you need is a splash of water... or a chanter.
Conclusion: A multi-layered dram with a mythical touch, showing that even a whisky with a monster background can have a gentle side.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Ardbeg ANTHOLOGY 15 year old - The Beithir's Tale tastes like
- Nose: Intense and powerful - the nose is immediately hit by an oily, spicy wave. Aromas of dark molasses, old railway sleepers (yes, really!), and smoked herbs create a dramatic, almost cinematic intro. Beneath these lie sweeter accents of grilled apples and raisins, adding unexpected depth. With a splash of water, cooler nuances emerge: eucalyptus, menthol, and a hint of fennel and pine - almost like walking through a mystical forest with incense.
- Palate: Amazingly balanced - despite its dramatic nose, the palate remains friendly. A tingling mouthfeel meets intense peat smoke, earthy coffee grounds, and a fruity note of black currants. Sweet lemon balsam brings freshness, while smoked mandarin oranges add an unusually delicious touch. Everything is framed by strong smoky tones that never overpower the rest.
- Finish: Long, smooth, and pleasantly complex. Subtle vanilla notes mingle with a hint of smoked butter. The peat fades slowly, like a final veil of mist over Islay - elegant and not too intrusive.
