Portrait: What makes the Glenfarclas 70 year old Vintage 1953 1st-fill Sherry Casks special

Glenfarclas, one of the last family-run and -operated distilleries in Scotland, has announced the release of its oldest whisky to date in June 2025. The Glenfarclas 70 Year Old, distilled on November 20, 1953, represents the pinnacle of the distillery's history and embodies over seven decades of careful maturation and craftsmanship. This whisky matured in the distillery's traditional dunnage warehouses in Speyside and was aged in first-fill sherry casks. Over the past seventy years, bottling has been overseen by six different distillery managers and is now available internationally.

The 70 year old Glenfarclas is an exceptionally rare whisky. At the time of its distillery distillery distillery distillery distillery in 1953, the Malt Exchange was a bustling hub of the distillery, where barley was still turned by hand on the malting floors. Today, this historic building serves as the Tun Room. This remarkable whisky comes from one of the few remaining casks of this era.

With only 262 bottles available worldwide, the Glenfarclas 70 Year Old is a significant release that combines rarity, provenance, and tradition.

The polished, dark teak color invites savouring. The nose unfolds aromas of stewed fruit and a gentle hint of Speyside peat. On the palate, rich notes of dark chocolate, spiced dried fruit, syrupy toffee, and intense coffee unfold in layers.

At 70 years old, this is the oldest bottling in the Glenfarclas Warehouse Series, surpassing the 30-, 35-, and 40-year-old editions. The packaging, in the signature, distinctive red Glenfarclas outer box, is deliberately simple—a family decision to allow the whisky itself to take center stage while remaining true to the brand's values of simplicity and integrity.

“This whisky has waited seventy years to be enjoyed. Through wars, the reign of a queen and now a king, the world has changed - yet this spirit has endured and stands as a rare and timeless embodiment of patience and craftsmanship.”
- Callum A. Fraser, Distillery Manager at Glenfarclas

“As Chairman of a family-run distillery, I feel a duty to oversee the production of our exceptional malt whisky - just as my ancestors have done before me. We take great pride in maintaining complete control over every step of production and in preserving our time-honored processes - in particular the use of directly fired stills, which produce a powerful and full-bodied spirit.”
- John L.S. Grant, Chairman and Fifth Generation

"Remarkably, this special cask has been maturing almost as long as I've been alive. Releasing it now is a true milestone that Callum and I have considered carefully and with great respect for his legacy."
- John L.S. Grant, Chairman and Fifth Generation
