Portrait: What makes Aberlour a'bunadh Batch No. 76 special
The Aberlour a'bunadh Batch No. 76 comes from one of the most traditional distilleries in the Scottish Speyside region. The Aberlour distillery was founded in 1879 and has been one of the leading international whisky brands since the late 1980s. It is known above all for its particularly creamy style, intensive sherry cask maturation, and the distinctive toffee character of their malts.
The a'bunadh range – Gaelic for "from the origin" – is a tribute to the distillery's historic roots. It is matured exclusively in former Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at cask strength Bottled, without chill filtration or the addition of colorings. Bottling takes place in heavy bottles reminiscent of old apothecary jars, traditionally sealed with wax.
A special feature of Aberlour maturation is the omission of the wooden stoppers commonly used in cask aging. Instead, corks are used, which allow for slower but more targeted evaporation. This allows for the escape of coarser aromatic substances, which contributes to the development of a particularly smooth and balanced whisky. The a'bunadh is considered the most original and authentic expression of the Aberlour style.
