Portrait: What makes the Lochlea 6 year old special
It is a Scottish rarity: The Lochlea Distillery is independent, family-run - and is one of the few distilleries in Scotland to grow its own barley. This is how authentic single malts are created, characterized by the barley of their region and a taste profile that is exceptional for the Lowlands.
With the Lochlea 6 year old , the “farm distillery” presents its oldest and only second bottling with an age statement. The single malt combines six barrels from 2018 selected by master blender Jill Boyd and distillery manager Darren McCormick.
The three First Fill Bourbon Barrels and Oloroso Sherry Butts are among the first Casks that Lochlea ever filled.
The ruby red Lochlea Senior was made with 50% vol. Bottled in just 2,500 bottles without dyes and without chill filtration. The resulting dram is wonderfully soft and sweet.
The nose has notes of juicy dark grapes, figs and milk chocolate, which transition to creamy panna cotta, malt biscuits and honey on the palate. In addition to the unmistakable Lochlea grain character, the aftertaste offers a bright note of lemon peel.
