Portrait: What makes the Glenfiddich Fire & Cane special
They say the Scots are traditional. And that's true - most of the time. But sometimes, when a bit of creativity (and maybe a dash of courage) is in the air in Dufftown, something is created that makes even die-hard whisky fans do a double take: Glenfiddich Fire & Cane. Behind this name isn't a new heavy metal band, but an experimental single malt from Glenfiddich, one of Scotland's most renowned and award-winning distilleries.
Since 1887, the Grant family has been developing new ideas here, while the iconic stag watches over the valley, ensuring that innovation never compromises good taste. With Fire & Cane, Glenfiddich demonstrates how tradition and a spirit of adventure can go hand in hand. Here, peaty, smoky whisky – the "Fire" – meets malts matured in classic ex-bourbon casks – the "Cane".
The whole thing then gets a finish in Latin American rum casks, which sounds like Scotland and the Caribbean have agreed to a little cultural exchange. The result is a whisky that proves that opposites not only attract, but sometimes create a real dream team. A little daring, a little different – and definitely something for everyone who thinks they've tried everything. Glenfiddich Fire & Cane is part of the Experimental Series, with which the distillery demonstrates that whisky can also be fun.
Not a stiff Highland gentleman, but a fiery adventurer with style and curiosity – or, as they might say in Dufftown: A wee bit wild, but awfully good company.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Glenfiddich Fire & Cane tastes like
Nose: Gentle, sweet peat smoke rises – not overpowering, more like smoke slowly dissipating in the breeze. Behind this unfold rich, sweet aromas of toffee and fresh citrus fruits, underscored by a subtle, spicy nuance in the background.
Palate: Lively and complex – reminiscent of the warmth of a campfire. Spicy oak notes mingle with toffee and a hint of green fruit. These are joined by impressions of baked apple, accompanied by soft, elegantly integrated smoke.
Finish: Pleasantly long and balanced. Smoke and sweetness are perfectly in harmony, fading away in perfect accord – an aftertaste that carries both fire and mellowness.
