Profile: What Makes Arran Cask Finish Port Special
Matured further in port casks from Portugal: the Arran first matured for around eight years in traditional oak casks and then received a finish in port casks from a Portuguese artisan producer. The fruity character of the Arran harmonises very nicely with the sweet, berried notes of the port.
The Arran Distillery is in Lochranza in the north of the Isle of Arran. Its origins go back to Harold Currie, a former director of Chivas Brothers, who founded Isle of Arran Distillers and commissioned the construction near the village of Lochranza. Despite its youth it has built a good reputation with a lively, fruity house style – citrus, apple and malt, with occasional hints of spice and coast. In the Port Cask Finish deep berry notes are added.
Tasting Notes: What Arran Cask Finish Port Tastes Like
- Nose: Distinct hazelnut and strawberry jam – some vanilla and oranges; vanilla spice, ripe citrus fruit, dried fruit and nuttiness, with a splash of water more mandarin with fudge and honey
- Palate: Now the fruit is in the foreground, oranges and limes, lightly spicy – cinnamon and oak; balanced and powerful with bitter orange, chocolate and cherries
