Portrait: What makes the Abducted Malt Whisky special
Abducted Malt Whisky – when whisky simply makes a run for it…
Some whiskies dutifully stay right where they were born. Abducted Malt Whisky is certainly not one of them. Its name implies an abduction—and that is exactly the concept here: a Scottish "new-make" malt is whisked away from its homeland and travels to Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. Wanderlust for whisky? Apparently, it starts right in the cask.
There, the traditional bodega Sánchez Romate Hnos. S.A. takes the helm.
The Jerez-based company was founded back in 1781, making it one of the region’s long-established houses. So, instead of the Scottish Highlands, the young malt now encounters the Andalusian climate—and a very distinctive form of maturation. The Abducted Malt spends a total of seven years in a solera and criadera system. This traditional process is closely linked to sherry production and involves interlinking different generations of casks. For the whisky, this means maturing in a series of casks that previously held Amontillado, Oloroso, and Pedro Ximénez sherry. It is a rather unusual journey for a whisky that began life as a Scottish new-make spirit. The Abducted Malt is bottled at 40% ABV in a classic 0.7-liter bottle. And since abductions are hardly mass-produced affairs, the annual output remains limited: a mere 715 bottles per year leave Jerez.
Abducted Malt thus unites two worlds of whisky in an unusual way: Scottish origins meet the Andalusian tradition of maturation. Or, to put it more casually: the whisky came from Scotland—and simply stayed in Spain longer than originally planned.
A blended malt with a rather unusual itinerary. And a story that inevitably makes you wonder: who actually abducted whom?
Tasting Notes: This is how the Abducted Malt Whisky tastes like
- Nose: Soft and creamy on the nose. Dark berries and ripe, dark stone fruit meet subtle dried fruit notes. Overall, the aroma is warm, rounded, and pleasantly balanced.
- Palate: Mouth-filling and soft, with lovely harmony. The fruity impressions from the nose carry through, accompanied by spicy notes. The interplay is balanced and smooth, with no single flavor dominating the others.
- Finish: Soft and rounded, with medium length. Ripe berry notes linger, accompanied by a pleasant sherry sweetness. The finish fades out calmly and harmoniously.
