Portrait: What makes the A.H. Riise Royal Danish Navy special
The A.H. Riise Royal Danish Navy Rum is a spirit whose very name evokes images of a man with at least three gold buttons on his uniform coat, occasionally striding with a dignified air across a historic deck. And indeed, behind the brand lies a story so maritime that reading it almost automatically makes you reach for a telescope.
It all begins in the 19th century with Albert Heinrich Riise, a Danish pharmacist who didn't settle for a quiet, comfortable town pharmacy. Instead, he was drawn to the Caribbean, more precisely to the island of Saint Thomas, which at that time still belonged to the Danish colonial empire, known as the Danish West Indies. There he opened a pharmacy and began producing spirits on the side – arguably one of the most enjoyable side hustles a pharmacist can have.
Riise had a talent for high-quality blends and quickly developed a good reputation. His products were not only popular with locals but also found their way to sailors and officers of the Royal Danish Navy. One can imagine that after weeks at sea, a ship appreciates certain things: solid ground, fresh food – and a well-made spirit. Over the years, the A.H. Riise brand has become a symbol of Caribbean-Danish rum tradition.
Even after Denmark sold the islands to the United States in 1917 - an event that went down in history as the Danish West Indies Transfer Treaty - the name Riise remained closely associated with the rum culture of the region. Today, A.H. Riise Royal Danish Navy Rum connects to this maritime past. The name deliberately evokes the time when Danish ships sailed the world's oceans and Caribbean ports were a regular stop on their itineraries.
You could say: This bottle carries a small piece of seafaring history within it – only packaged in a much more practical way than a complete sailing ship.
In short: Whoever looks at this spirit is not just looking at a bottle, but at a blend of apothecary spirit, colonial history, Caribbean adventure, and a touch of Danish seafaring romance. And quite honestly – that sounds like a story you'd love to share.
Tasting Notes: This is how the A.H. Riise Royal Danish Navy tastes like
- Nose: On the nose, a distinctly sweet impression of sugar cane syrup is initially apparent. This is accompanied by woody aromas of cedarwood and a pleasant spiciness. In the background, further nuances develop: roasted coffee brings a slightly bitter depth, while anise and licorice lend the overall impression a characteristic aromatic note.
- Palate: On the palate, the spirit presents itself as exceptionally sweet and full-bodied. The aromas of anise and licorice are again clearly evident and shape the flavor profile. The previously perceptible spicy notes remain, but recede somewhat into the background, giving way to the pronounced sweetness and the spicy-sweet licorice hints.
- Finish: The finish is long and lingering. The elegant, soft sweetness, in particular, lingers for a long time, ensuring a harmonious and well-rounded finish.
