Portrait: What makes the No. 3 - London Dry Gin special
Number 3, St. James's Street, London - not just anyone lives here, but real spirits royalty.
Since 1698 - yes, that's not a typo - this venerable building has housed Berry Bros. & Rudd, Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchant. Family-run, Authority to the Court and, as an independent bottler, notorious for particularly fine wines. Over 300 years of concentrated expertise in bottle form – the result is a portfolio that will make connoisseurs go weak at the knees. And at the heart of it all: No. 3 London Dry Gin - a house brand with genuine star appeal.
The mission was clear: A gin as gin should be. No more, but certainly no less. So none other than "Gin Doctor" David Clutton was sent to work. He tinkered for 730 days on the perfect recipe – presumably with a lab coat, a magnifying glass, and a juniper infusion for breakfast. The result: a classic London Dry Gin with a clear focus on the essentials – juniper, citrus, spices - and thus a soothing antidote to the floral fanfare of the New Western style.
Voted "World's Best Gin" four times in a row - who can say that? Exactly. No. 3 was also at the forefront at the ISW Awards 2023, casually snagging the gold medal.
And the best part? Just six botanicals are perfectly sufficient. Three fruits, three herbs - no frills, just pure enjoyment:
- Juniper berries for the classic gin character
- Orange and lemon peels for the freshness that brightens your day
- Angelica root for the dry finishing touch
- And coriander and cardamom deliver a peppery, spicy kiss for the palate at the end
In short: No. 3 is gin as you dream of it.
Tasting Notes: This is how the No. 3 - London Dry Gin tastes like
- Nose: clear, fresh, and classic - dominant juniper aromas, as befits a true London Dry, meet a fine citrus freshness - especially lemon and orange zest - accompanied by subtle floral notes and a delicate peppery spice that piques curiosity at the first sip.
- Palate: dry, precise, and wonderfully balanced - juniper remains in the spotlight, accompanied by lively citrus notes that give the gin a crisp freshness. Coriander and cardamom bring an elegant spiciness to the table without being intrusive. Angelica root provides structure and a pleasant earthy depth in the background - no botanical circus, but a flavor-focused presentation.
- Finish: long, dry, and elegant - the spicy warmth of coriander and cardamom resonates pleasantly. accompanied by a subtle citrus bitterness - the juniper remains present until the end - classic, clear and full of character
