Portrait: What makes the Ardbeg DOLCE special

When Islay celebrates, it does so in style. Every year on the final Saturday of the legendary Fèis Ìle festival, this small Scottish island transforms into the epicenter for all who love smoke, character, and a touch of madness: Ardbeg Day. And it is precisely for this occasion that Ardbeg DOLCE takes the stage - a Limited Edition that feels as though a 1960s Italian film director had suddenly decided to craft a whisky.

Ardbeg itself boasts a long and storied history. Distilling has taken place on Islay’s wild southern coast since 1815 - a place where Atlantic waves thunder against black rocks and the weather seems to delight in serving up all four seasons at once. Among whisky enthusiasts, the distillery has long held cult status. Or, as the "Ardbeggians" would put it: it is a religion with a faintly smoky finish.

With DOLCE, Ardbeg now builds a charming bridge between Islay and Sicily. Inspired by "La Dolce Vita," this release sees the rugged Scottish isle meet Mediterranean zest for life. One automatically pictures Vespas, fluttering silk scarves, oversized sunglasses, and a village square situated somewhere between the coast, a film set, and an al fresco dinner. Except that, instead of an espresso, an Ardbeg glass suddenly sits on the table.

Incidentally, the name DOLCE is no mere coincidence: Marsala casks come in various styles - ranging from dry to sweet. "Dolce" denotes the softest and most indulgent of these variants.

It is precisely these Sicilian Marsala wine casks that meet classic ex-Bourbon casks here, lending this edition its distinctive character.

And perhaps that is precisely the most beautiful concept behind Ardbeg DOLCE: two islands, two mindsets, and countless Ardbeg fans celebrating the good life together. Whether amidst Islay’s famous rain or beneath the Sicilian sun - the main thing is that Italian music is playing somewhere, someone is passionately debating whisky, and at least one Vespa is parked askew right outside the door.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Ardbeg DOLCE tastes like

  • Nose: Robust, complex, and unmistakably Ardbeg: dense smoke intertwines with fruity notes of apricots, plump raisins, and sticky dates. Tart apple compote and orange marmalade provide a fresh, subtly citrusy elegance. With a splash of water, deeper, earthy facets emerge - roasted mushrooms, pine needles, salted fish, capers, and olives lend the whisky a maritime spiciness. Islay’s rugged larder meets a Sicilian garden.
  • Palate: On the palate, Ardbeg DOLCE begins with spicy intensity, featuring notes of cinnamon, star anise, and a hint of licorice sharpness. A warm sweetness then unfolds: maple-smoked wood, baked dates with walnuts, honeycomb, and dark chocolate define the profile. Dried fruits and delicate lemon zest add freshness and depth, while salted nuts and aromatic dried herbs provide balance and a savory character.
  • Finish: The finish is long, multifaceted, and powerful. Smoked applewood, dry tobacco, and the embers of a slowly dying campfire linger for a long time. These notes are joined by the typically intense, oily peat aroma that Ardbeg fans cherish so deeply.
