Portrait: What makes the Tartan Army - Ben Nevis 11 year old by Signatory Vintage special

When Scotland takes the field for the World Cup, they do not do so quietly, subtly, or - least of all - inconspicuously. Instead, the legendary Tartan Army marches in - clad in kilts, waving flags, playing bagpipes, and generating a volume of sound that likely still echoes all the way back in the Highlands.

And precisely for this spectacle, Signatory Vintage has brought a fitting companion to the glass: the Ben Nevis 11 year old "Tartan Army" Single Malt.

Behind the name stands the independent bottler Signatory Vintage, known for not staging whiskies, but rather simply giving them the space they deserve. No theatrics, no unnecessary tricks - instead, the kind of whisky that says: "I can hold my own."

The foundation for this Highlander is provided by the storied Ben Nevis Distillery—a distillery overlooking the eponymous mountain, the highest in Great Britain. There, this 11-year-old single malt matured in selected sherry casks - precisely the type of cask that would likely cause even seasoned whisky warehousemen to speak in hushed, reverent tones.

Visually, the "Tartan Army" bottle is no less striking: featuring a jersey-style label that is bound to turn heads even while sitting on the shelf. And because true fans never do things by halves, the whisky itself was, naturally, neither colored nor chill-filtered.

Authenticity, therefore, takes center stage here - just as it does for a fan who stands steadfast in the stadium, even in the rain - goosebumps and all.

At 46% ABV, the Highlander possesses enough self-assurance to hold its own both before and after the match. And while the Tartan Army sings in the stadium, this whisky marches into the glass rather quietly yet resolutely - ready to accompany any period of extra time with style.

In short: A whisky just like a Scottish football fan. Loud, proud, full of character - and guaranteed not interested in going home early.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Tartan Army - Ben Nevis 11 year old Signatory Vintage tastes like

  • Nose: Intense and multifaceted, with distinct sherry influences. Dark dried fruits - raisins and dates - meet spicy oak notes. These are joined by subtle hints of cocoa, leather, and a light nuttiness that lends depth to the bouquet.
  • Palate: Robust and full-bodied on the palate, featuring a distinctive sherry sweetness. Flavors of dried fruits mingle with spicy oak, dark chocolate, and a hint of malt. The structure feels robust, balanced, and typically Highland - present, yet not overpowering.
  • Finish: Long and warming, with lingering notes of oak, spices, and dark fruits. A subtle, dry spiciness remains, ensuring a lasting, characterful conclusion.
