Portrait: What makes the Don Papa Quincentennial Edition special
Sometimes a spirit tells a story not just about sugar cane, casks, and maturation—but about great adventures. The Don Papa Quincentennial Edition belongs precisely to this category. It is, in a sense, a liquid reminder of one of the boldest voyages in human history.
The occasion for this special bottling is the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the globe. In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan, commissioned by Emperor Charles V (later King Carlos I of Spain), sent a fleet on an expedition with only one goal: to find the legendary Spice Islands. Sounds simple – but it was anything but. Instead of a leisurely sailing trip, it became an odyssey halfway around the globe, one that profoundly changed navigation, trade, and our understanding of the world.
On this journey, the Spanish finally reached what are now the Philippines for the first time. It was there, more precisely on the island of Negros, that the story of Don Papa began many centuries later. The brand represents rum from "Sugarlandia," as Negros is often called because of its fertile sugarcane fields.
Here, at the foot of the mighty Kanlaon volcano, the climatic conditions are almost luxurious for rum maturation: tropical warmth, high humidity, and ample time. The Quincentennial Edition commemorates this historical event and combines it with the brand's signature style. The spirit begins its journey in a classic way – with two years of maturation in ex-bourbon barrels. Then it embarks on a second stage: another five years in casks previously filled with Ruby Port.
One could say, then, that this rum has completed its own little world tour – from the sugarcane field to American bourbon barrels and finally to Portuguese port casks. The Don Papa Quincentennial Edition is therefore not only a tribute to the spirit of discovery and maritime history, but also a beautiful example of how historical inspiration and modern rum culture can come together.
Or, to put it another way: if Magellan had known back then that his voyage would one day lead to an anniversary bottling, he might have taken one more cask on board.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Don Papa Quincentennial Edition tastes like
- Nose: Deep and complex with aromas of licorice, polished oak, dark chocolate, and muscovado sugar. These are followed by hints of blood orange and ripe red berries, accompanied by a delicate touch of fresh vanilla bean.
- Palate: Rich and mouth-filling with remarkable complexity. Notes of toasted oak, cinnamon, Arabica coffee, and toffee mingle with subtle nuances of vanilla, ripe orchard fruit, and brown sugar.
- Finish: Long and balanced with lingering impressions of spicy oak, gentle sweetness, and fine coffee and toffee notes that fade slowly and harmoniously.
