Portrait: What makes the Edradour 12 year old SCAA Air Ambulance special
Sometimes whisky is just whisky. And sometimes it is liquid “uisge beatha” – the water of life – with an extra dose of meaning. The Edradour 12 year old SCAA Air Ambulance clearly belongs to the second category. It is produced in the traditional Edradour Distillery in the Scottish Highlands, not far from Pitlochry.
Edradour is considered one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland – practically David among a sea of stainless steel Goliaths. Founded in 1825, the distillery has a turbulent history: changes of ownership, economic upheavals, and always the art of remaining true to itself. Small, independent, and with character.
Less well known is that Edradour once received an indirect visit from the air – from Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA). This donation-funded organization ensures that even remote corners of Scotland receive rapid medical assistance in emergencies.
Their mission is as simple as it is impressive: no one should suffer or die simply because help takes too long. In a country with Highlands, islands, and more sheep than people, this is quite a logistical feat. The 12-year-old special bottling – distilled in 2013 and bottled in December 2025 – is a tribute to these flying lifesavers.
Matured in sherry casks, bottled at 46% ABV, uncolored and unchill filtered, it remains true to the style of the house: honest, handcrafted, and unpretentious. There are exactly 3,216 bottles worldwide – enough to attract attention, but too few to sit on the shelf for long.
The special thing about it: All proceeds from the sales go directly to the SCAA. At least £70,000 is expected to be raised. So you're not just symbolically toasting the crew in the cockpit – you're directly helping to ensure the next mission can take off.
This Edradour 12 year old combines Highland tradition with genuine down-to-earth values – and takes off for a good cause at the same time.
