Portrait: What makes the Dragonjuice 10 year old Batch #2 Whisky Druid special

If a dragon were to land on the Isle of Mull, it probably wouldn't be because of the sheep, but because of the peat. Luckily, we don't need mythical creatures – Dragonjuice 10 Year Old Batch #2 from the mystical pen of Michel Reick is enough. Reick, better known as the creative mind behind Whisky Druid, has cultivated a reputation somewhere between alchemist and cask whisperer. His bottlings are not mass-produced, but rather carefully crafted small batches from renowned Scottish distilleries. Each edition feels a bit like a magic potion – only instead of unicorn hair, first-fill casks are used. Batch #2 of Dragonjuice is a ten-year-old Highland single malt from the Isle of Mull – an island known more for its wild nature and dramatic coastlines than for its reticence. A mere 951 bottles of this elixir exist. That's less than some wedding parties consume on a very good evening.

Four different, first-filled (liqueur) wine casks were allowed to leave their mark here: Ruby Port Barrique, PX Sherry Hogshead, Oloroso Sherry Hogshead and Red Wine Barrique. This sounds a bit like the drinks menu of a particularly ambitious medieval festival – but in reality, it's precise cask architecture aimed at shaping character and depth. Bottled at a robust 50.2% ABV, naturally non-chill filtered and uncolored. Nothing is embellished or smoothed over here – this whisky wears its natural attire with pride. "Dragon smoke meets dark sweetness," the announcement proclaims. The name Dragonjuice says it all. It stands for power, myth, and a good dose of tongue-in-cheek drama. A Highlander with a hood, so to speak.

In short: Anyone looking for a bottling that combines history, craftsmanship, and a touch of fantasy will find not just any ordinary dram here – but a small chapter of whisky magic from the windswept Isle of Mull.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Dragonjuice 10 year old Batch #2 Whisky Druid tastes like

  • Nose: Dry, ashy wood smoke rises immediately, making a striking first impression. After a brief moment, the peat becomes more pronounced, adding further depth to the nose. Behind this, fruity-sweet nuances of dried fruit and ripe apricot unfold, creating an exciting contrast to the smoke. A delicate hazelnut note resonates in the background, giving the overall impression a fine, nutty finish.
  • Palate: Powerful and peaty on the palate, with a direct presence and clear structure. The intense smokiness carries a heavy, dark, and simultaneously fruity sweetness that gradually expands. With some time, the whisky becomes softer and rounder; the alcohol is well integrated and supports the aromas without being overpowering. Dark grapes emerge and mingle with subtle nutty notes reminiscent of Oloroso barrel aging. Different barrel impressions flash by, adding complexity, while the peat smoke becomes increasingly "dirty" and earthy.
  • Finish: Long and intense, characterized by pronounced, "dirty" peat smoke. A heavy, deep sweetness lingers, accompanied by fruity hints. Smoke and dark fruit notes remain harmonious, creating a lasting, powerful finale.
