Where sea Where nature and land meet, sometimes great things emerge – and occasionally even whisky. On the rugged coast of the Breton peninsula of Pleubian, just steps from the Atlantic Ocean, the Celtic Whisky Distillery has been working on precisely this feat since 1997. With Glann Ar Mor ("By the Sea" in Breton), the French pioneers set out early on not to copy single malt, but to reimagine it – with their own signature style, plenty of patience, and a healthy dose of sea air in the surrounding area.
The Glann Ar Mor 2014 Single Cask #20026, bottled in 2025 for the Journal des Kirsch No. 13, is a prime example. Or rather, a maritime logbook in bottle form. This bottling marks several premieres. It is the first French whisky in the Journal des Kirsch series and also the first single cask ever to come directly from France to Germany. Personally selected on-site by the importer, of course.
After all, one doesn't travel to the end of Brittany for just any cask. The Celtic Whisky Distillery relies on classic craftsmanship: long fermentation, direct-fired pot stills, and maturation where the sea remains ever-present. No industrial mass production, but rather deliberate work against the clock - or rather, with it.
This distillate spent ten years maturing in Fresh American Oak Cask number 20026 before being bottled on July 16, 2025, in exactly 244 bottles.
Non-chill filtered, uncolored, and of course bottled at cask strength with a substantial 55.3% ABV. The fact that Glann Ar Mor is often mistaken for Scotland internationally is something the Bretons take in stride.
They know that origin isn't a matter of postcode, but of attitude. And that's clearly defined in this single cask – a French single malt with a coastal view, history, and character.
In short: A whisky that shows you don't necessarily have to cross the English Channel for big names.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Glann Ar Mor 2014 Single Cask #20026 Journal des Kirsch No. 13 tastes like

• Nose: Salted caramel, roasted almonds, and dried apricot are clearly in the foreground. The nose is clean, focused, and ripe from the start. Subtle vanilla aromas and a noticeable, but restrained, hint of sea air are also present.
• Palate: Strongly malty, round, and well-balanced. The sweetness develops evenly and is supported by a creamy, slightly waxy texture. The bourbon cask is well integrated and provides structure without dominating. A distinct salty note and maritime freshness characterize the overall impression - coastal, mineral, and precise, without smoke.
• Finish: Long-lasting, slightly sweet and salty. The finish remains present without feeling heavy, and fades out cleanly and balanced.
