Portrait: What makes the Springbank 10 year old Fino Cask Matured special
Some whiskies don't need to make a big show of it to get attention. The Springbank 10 year old Fino Cask Matured definitely belongs in this category – it stands there, nodding politely, knowing full well that connoisseurs will be intrigued anyway.
After all, it comes from Campbeltown, that small Scottish whisky stronghold that once had more distilleries than pubs (today, unfortunately, the ratio is reversed). Springbank itself is a true exception. As one of the last fully family-owned distilleries in Scotland, they still do everything themselves: from malting and distilling to bottling.
Efficiency is secondary – character and tradition take precedence. The fact that this occasionally causes friction is taken in stride by Springbank. Anyone who's been making whisky since the 19th century is entitled to do so.
This bottling is the fourth release in a five-part sherry series, which reliably makes collectors' hearts beat faster. It was distilled in July 2015 and bottled in October 2025 – they take their time in Campbeltown. The whisky initially matured for four years in refill ex-bourbon hogsheads before being transferred for a further six years to first-fill American oak Fino sherry hogsheads. Sounds technical? It is.
And that's precisely what makes it so exciting for many. The Springbank 10 year old was bottled at cask strength. No dilution, no smoothing over, no compromise. Just as it comes from the cask – which at Springbank is less of a marketing promise than a matter of course.
The release of 11,400 bottles is manageable enough to arouse desire, but large enough not to immediately achieve legendary status. Not yet.
In short: This bottling is typical Springbank. Distinctive, steeped in tradition, and with a slight tendency towards stubborn consistency. Not a whisky for fleeting trends, but for people who appreciate history, craftsmanship, and a distillery that has successfully refused to be "modern" for generations. And that's precisely why it feels so modern.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Springbank 10 year old Fino Cask Matured tastes like
- Nose: The aroma opens with vibrant notes of blood orange, immediately conveying freshness and depth. These are joined by hints of brandy snaps and creamy vanilla custard. The bouquet is rounded off by sweet impressions of preserved fruits, which lend the aroma a pleasantly nostalgic note.
- Palate: On the palate, multifaceted nuances of cinnamon sugar emerge, providing a warm spiciness. Fresh mint adds an invigorating accent, while praline and dark Morello cherries contribute depth and sweetness. A touch of lemon curd brings additional excitement and a fine balance to the overall impression.
- Finish: The finish is smooth and lingering. Notes of key lime provide a fresh, slightly tart component, accompanied by hints of cola bottles and smooth maple syrup. A harmonious finish that fades slowly, leaving a lasting impression.
