Portrait: What makes the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva special

Man Imagine a rum that presents itself so convincingly that it even bears an entire professional title in its name: Diplomatico. Not "Mr. Müller", not "the rum next door" - no, here comes someone with international connections, presumably with an invisible briefcase and a very good handshake.

His home is in Venezuela, where Destilerías Unidas has been working for years to give this rum its cosmopolitan character. Made from molasses from select sugarcane plantations and distilled in traditional copper stills, it then takes the time many of us would like in our daily lives: up to 12 years of rest in oak Casks. You could say it has studied patience – presumably with distinction.

Speaking of distinction: The Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva has long been an international favorite in bars and living rooms. A rum that is popular with both experienced bartenders and people who simply want to have "something good in the cupboard" - for guests or for those special evenings when you treat yourself.

But then there's this small, almost diplomatic crisis surrounding its name. Proudly known worldwide as "Diplomatico," in Germany for years he suddenly had to call himself "Botucal" - a bit like James Bond having to go by "Herr B." here. The reason: trademark hurdles. This name change dragged on for many years (more precisely, since the 2010s) until finally, in the spring of 2026, the official return to the original name was permitted. Since then, he can once again confidently say: "I am Diplomatico." And quite frankly, it suits him better. Because whether neat, in a cocktail, or as a stylish accompaniment to dessert, this rum always seems to have the situation under control. Without any fuss. A true diplomat indeed.

Tasting Notes: This is how the Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva tastes like

  • Nose: On the nose, an intense and complex profile is revealed, characterized by dark, dried fruits. The aroma is dense and inviting, with a certain depth that immediately reveals a complex rum in the glass.
  • Palate: A broad spectrum unfolds on the palate. Fresh pineapple provides a vibrant component, accompanied by nutty nuances and delicate orange peel. Sweet hints of toffee and licorice add structure. Spicy accents like allspice and cinnamon bring additional excitement, while subtle notes of tobacco and leather add depth and character.
  • Finish: The finish is long and multifaceted, with a harmonious aftertaste of the previously perceived aromas. Spicy and slightly bitter impressions remain present and fade slowly, accompanied by a subtle sweetness and the characteristic notes of tobacco and leather.
