Portrait: What makes the ElsBurn Cosy Winter The XIth Edition Special Release 2025 special
When the wind is howling outside, the neighbor is rewiring their Christmas lights for the fifth time, and the first Christmas cookies are already suspiciously depleted, then you know: It's time for the ElsBurn Cosy Winter - The XIth Edition Special Release 2025. For years, this winter special bottling has appeared as reliably as Santa Claus – only you don't have to impress ElsBurn with poems or good behavior. Getting your hands on one bottle is perfectly sufficient.
The limited edition – exactly 654 bottles in 2025 – is produced at the ElsBurn Distillery in the Harz Mountains, home of the “Original Hercynian Single Malt Whisky”. “Hercynian” sounds like a wizarding academy, but it's simply the Latin name for the Harz region. And there really is a touch of magic at the distillery: From a lovingly renovated former mill, the family business has transformed itself since the 1980s from a regional insider tip to an international whisky sensation. German whisky history “made in Lower Saxony” – or as they might say in the Harz Mountains: “Jau, dat löppt!”
For the eleventh “Cosy Winter” edition, the master distillers have once again worked their cask magic. This time, first-fill Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads and first-fill Ruby port hogsheads were used – true celebratory casks. Everything remains as natural as the Harz winter itself: uncolored, unchill filtered, and bottled at 51.7% ABV. Simply a dram that doesn't disguise itself, but proudly shows what it's capable of.
Especially exclusive: This bottling is limited to 654 bottles. So, if you're too late, it's not life that will punish you – but scarcity. Because once the 654 bottles are gone, it's another year's wait.
The ElsBurn Cosy Winter XI is therefore not just a whisky, but a small seasonal ritual: Harz craftsmanship, a wintry atmosphere, and a touch of festive magic – all packed into a bottle that is definitely rarer than a stress-free pre-Christmas weekend. Cheers!
Tasting Notes: This is how the ElsBurn Cosy Winter The XIth Edition Special Release 2025 tastes like
- Nose: Rich redcurrant jelly and warm plum compote open the aroma, nestled within the buttery, slightly caramelized notes of freshly baked puff pastry. These are joined by fruity aromas reminiscent of classic British fruitcakes, accompanied by delicate hints of chocolate-covered raisins.
- Palate: On the palate, the fruity impressions of berry compote and dark red fruits combine with the delicate sweetness of pastry. The impression of joulutorttu (crispy baked puff pastry) creates a blend of dough, fruit, and subtle spice nuances. Subtle hints of chocolate and a touch of crunchy brittle add warm, comforting accents.
- Finish: Medium to long, carried by fruity aftertastes and gentle sweetness. Chocolate-covered raisins and fine brittle pieces remain pleasantly present, rounding off the finish with a harmonious blend of warmth and winter pastry associations.
