Portrait: What makes the Savanna 5 year old Rhum Traditionnel special
Anyone who thinks of white beaches and cocktails with little umbrellas when they think of "island romance" should definitely travel to La Réunion. There, at the foot of the majestic Piton de la Fournaise volcano, lies the Savanna Distillery – a place where sugarcane is making history (and not just in liquid form). Here, somewhere between sugar plantation and volcanic crater, rum has been distilled since the 19th century – by hand, with heart, and a good dose of tropical serenity.
The man who catapulted Savanna into the modern age was none other than Émile Hugot, affectionately known as "Monsieur Sucre". The name says it all: a sugar expert who knew how to make something great out of sweetness – namely, excellent rum. Savanna is something of a chameleon in the rum world: The distillery produces Rhum Agricole, Rhum Traditionnel, and Grand Arôme, that is, rum made from sugarcane juice and molasses – a feat mastered by only a few worldwide.
Between July and November, things really get going here: The sugarcane flows, the yeast dances, and long fermentations create ester bombs that could even briefly turn the heads of Jamaican rums. The Savanna 5 Year Old Rhum Traditionnel is, in a sense, the distillery's liquid calling card. Matured in French oak cognac casks, distilled from Molasses that has soaked up five years of tropical sun.
Tasting Notes: This is how the Savanna 5 year old Rhum Traditionnel tastes like
- Nose: Inviting and vibrant with a bouquet of ripe tropical fruits – mango, pineapple, and passion fruit open the aroma, accompanied by delicate notes of roasted almonds and soft marzipan. With a little aeration, delicious pastry aromas unfold, reminiscent of baba au rhum, brioche, and sweet yeast pastries. A harmonious interplay of exotic freshness and creamy sweetness.
- Palate: Soft and smooth on the palate, initially dominated by juicy tropical fruit. As it develops, subtle spicy accents emerge – a hint of anise, accompanied by mild spices such as saffron and a touch of curry, which add depth and structure. A balanced, well-rounded impression with an elegant interplay between fruit, spice, and wood.
- Finish: Medium-long, smooth, and harmonious. The tropical fruit remains present, accompanied by a delicate almond note and a hint of spice. An elegant, slightly exotic finale that makes you want another sip.
